THE CASTLES OF GTLC LUXEMBOURG
Four castles as a common thread
In Vianden, Brandenbourg, Bourscheid, and Esch-sur-Sûre, the castles dominate the valleys and tell the story of the Éislek.
The GTLC Luxembourg routes were designed around these four emblematic sites. Depending on the chosen distance, participants will discover one or more of these silhouettes that mark the landscape of northern Luxembourg.
VIANDEN CASTLE
Where it all begins
Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, Vianden Castle dominates the Our valley and the town set at its feet. Restored with respect for its historical forms, it is one of the most emblematic monuments in Luxembourg.
On February 27, 2027, it will watch over the start of the five races. Its silhouette will accompany the first kilometers before becoming, on the way back, the sign that Vianden is getting closer.

BRANDENBOURG CASTLE
A fortress above the valley
The origins of Brandenbourg Castle date back to the 10th century. Its ruins are set on a rocky spur overlooking the village and the Blees valley.
The keep and the remains of its fortifications still give an idea today of the importance once held by this strategic site. In the heart of a wooded landscape, Brandenbourg offers a particularly memorable passage on the long distances.

BOURSCHEID CASTLE
The giant of the Éislek
Perched on a rocky promontory above the Sûre valley, Bourscheid is the largest fortified castle in Luxembourg.
Probably built from the 10th century onwards, it was expanded over time and surrounded by a vast outer wall flanked by towers. Its position, architecture, and surrounding terrain make it one of the major passages of GTLC75 and GTLC100.

ESCH-SUR-SÛRE CASTLE
At the end of the Éislek
First mentioned in 927, Esch-sur-Sûre Castle is among the oldest in Luxembourg. Its ruins overlook the old town, set in a particularly narrow meander of the Sûre.
To reach Esch-sur-Sûre, GTL100 participants will have to venture deeper into the Éislek. The castle will mark one of the furthest points of their route before returning to Vianden.
